Book Review: Ashley Bell: A Novel by Dean Koontz

Ashley BellI have been reading Dean Koontz for over a decade and he continues to amaze and surprise me with each new book. Ashley Bell: A Novel is not an exception. From page one to the last, Dean Koontz held my attention. And I only have one complaint – the book had to end!

Southern California is the land of sunshine and surf. That has been Bibi Blair’s life since she was a child. Born to surfer-turn-successful-entrepreneur parents, she is a well-adjusted child. A published author at a young age and engaged to the love of her life, everything is going well of Bibi. That is, until the day she was told she had brain cancer and had one year to live.

But, before you think that is the pivotal point in the story, hold your horses! The real drama begins the next day when Bibi was told that she was cancer free. She goes home to find a mysterious woman at her doorstep, telling her that Bibi escaped death because she has to save a girl named Ashley Bell.

And from there on, Dean Koontz brings his readers to a rollercoaster ride that is both exhilarating and frightening. With flashbacks augmenting present-day POVs from the characters, Koontz developed well-rounded characters that readers easily empathize with.

Bibi, with her urgent need to find Ashley Bell not because she has to but because she firmly believes she needs to help the young girl; The Blairs, Bibi’s parents who just want the best for their daughter and will do everything and anything for her; Paxton, Bibi’s Navy SEAL boyfriend and Pogo, Bibi’s BFF round up the quad who are all rooting for Bibi’s survival.

Genius storytelling with ingenious plot twists, Dean Koontz has another winner in his hands with “Ashley Bell: A Novel.”
