Book Review: Grand Cru Heist (A Winemaker Detective Novel)

Rating:

grand cru heistAmong the Top Ten fictional sleuths, there is only one whose stories were not written in English. In fact, the adventures of Commissaire Jules Maigret, which is written in French is the only non-English in the list.

Well, you can add another French detective, albeit, an amateur – winemaker and wine connoisseur Benjamin Cooker.

In Grand Cru Heist, Benjamin Cooker was the victim of a carjacking in the streets of Paris. Losing his classic Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was hard but the thieves’ taking his journal with his meticulously handwritten notes was devastating.

Still, life goes on. After being released from the hospital, Benjamin Cooker decided to recuperate at the Chateau de La Tortiniere at the Touraine region. But trouble seems to follow him.

While in Touraine, Cooker meets a mysterious Englishman who disappeared after two murders were committed. Then, Cooker hears from his vintner friend that the most expensive wines in his cellar had been stolen.

After being cleared by the police, Cooker goes home only to find the mystery thickening. And together with his assistant Virgile, he finds out that everything is not what they seem.

A captivating read that you can actually finish in one sitting. The whodunit element will hook you but the encyclopedic knowledge of wines will make you a fan!

Another great mystery from authors Jean-Pierre Alaux and Noël Balen! Thank goodness that Le French Book decided to translate this into English!
