Book Review: Half a King by Joe Abercrombie

Rating:

half a kingIn the 21st century, the media has nicknamed Prince William and Prince Harry as the Heir and the Spare. But, in a world far far away and a time long ago, being the heir means all the glory and the spare means oblivion.

For Prince Yarvi, who was born with only one good hand, being the spare means being absolved of the responsibilities of the throne and being able to choose another path other than being a warrior especially since he cannot fight.

But the gods of his world has a wry sense of humor. A twist of fate made him king; Half a King, really because he has only one good hand. But instead of sitting on the throne, he was betrayed, sold as a slave and had to find allies in the most unexpected places for him to reclaim his throne.

A coming of age story, Half a King is a brutal narrative with just a touch of tenderness that makes the characters endearing though they are full of violence. Told as a first person account, author Joe Abercrombie was able to flesh out all the characters to be three-dimensional as seen through the eyes of Prince Yarvi.

The surprises at every turn kept my adrenaline going and I could not turn the page fast enough to know what happened next. The ending was a surprise also, and I never saw it coming!

If you’re a fantasy fan, this is a must-read book for the summer! This book is Rated M for Mature due to violence. There are no sex scenes in this book.
