Book Review: Luck Is No Lady by Amy Sandas

Luck Is No LadyI have to admit, I picked up this book because of the title. I’m so used to the term lady luck that claiming that “Luck Is No Lady” just caught my eye. And guess what? Luck, whether she’s a lady or not is on my side. The book turned out to be an enjoyable read and the characters quite unexpected.

In historical romances, the hero is usually a titled gentleman. In “Luck Is No Lady,” Roderick Bentley is the bastard son of an Earl and the daughter of another Earl. But instead of being ashamed of his birth, Roderick embraced it and became the wealthy owner of an exclusive gambling establishment.

Still, though he exists in the fringes of polite society, Roderick still gets invited to the haut ton drawing rooms and party. After all, he is the ton’s money man, their go-to man for profitable and legitimate investments.

True to form in historical romances, Roderick Bentley and gently bred Emma Chadwick met in one of those extravagant parties of the London season. Hiding from would-like-to-be paramours, Roderick and Emma found themselves behind the same curtain!

The attraction between them was palpable even at that time, but nothing would have come out of it if not the bad luck (or should it be good luck) that the Chadwick’s finances are in shambles and Emma needed a job. As luck would have it, there was an opening at Roderick’s place of business. Their second meeting was at the job interview and this is the point that it truly became very interesting!

A fast and easy read, that quite frankly, you can finish “Luck Is No Lady” while tanning poolside or at the beach. Roderick and Emma are quite fetching characters. They are so much alike, yet also very different thus making their love story an interesting read.

Roderick might be a rouge and a non-conformist, yet there is enough gentility in him to balance the bad boy in him. Emma might be this prim and proper lady, but there is enough adventurer in her to make her break the rules!

Luck Is No Lady (Fallen Ladies)” is Rated M for Mature due to sexual content and some violence.
