Book Review: Rivals of Fortune & The Impetuous Heiress by Jane Ashford

Rivals of Fortune The Impetuous HeiressTwo books in one, “Rivals of Fortune / The Impetuous Heiress” is actually an e-book reissue of Jane Ashford’s classic Regency romance novel. And though approximately 30 years had passed since it first came out on paperback, both stories are as lovable as ever.

“Rivals of Fortune” follows Joanna Rowntree, a young debutante scheduled to go up to London for her first season. Unfortunately, even before she came out, her childhood sweetheart married another! And then, as if the Fates were playing with her, two suitors came out of the blue. As Joanna wonders if she can love again, the heated competition for her hand between Jonathan Erland and Sir Rollin Denby has taken a life of its own.

In “The Impetuous Heiress,” Lady Alicia Alston and Ian MacClain, Earl of Cairnyllan seem to be unsuited for each other. That is until they exchanged an unexpected kiss and all of a sudden, all bets were off!

Both novels are enjoyable reads and all the heroes and heroines are lovable. And though the stories have remained relevant ever after 30 years, it is hard not to notice the leisurely pace of the story telling. This slower pacing did not deter from my enjoyment of the stories though. It is just to note that the way we consume novels have changed in the past three decades. Thanks to MTV 3-minute music videos and the internet which gave us instant gratification for media consumption, we expect everything to be faster.

Rivals of Fortune / The Impetuous Heiress” is Rated T for Teens. There are no sex scenes in this book.
