Summer Reading: Angel in the Whirlwind Series by Christopher Nuttall

the oncoming stormWith the Hunger Games series over and you are looking for a new heroine to follow, then let me introduce you to Katherine “Kat” Falcone, an aristocrat who has the dubious honor of becoming the youngest captain ever in the Commonwealth Empire.

A space opera, it is partly a coming of age story as young Katherine who wanted to carve a life outside of her father’s wealth and influence decided to join the Navy.

But, she underestimated her father. With his machinations, Kat was promoted to Captain and had the dubious honor of becoming the youngest naval captain in the empire’s history.

Aside from the obvious that Katherine has a lot of growing up to do, she found herself in command of a warship, and expected to lead a battle hardened crew. And this is what Book 1, “The Oncoming Storm” is all about. Not only has Kat need to prove herself to her crew, she also has to deal with very personal issues.

Book 1 is mostly about introductions while Book 2, “Falcone Strike (Angel in the Whirlwind Book 2)” shows Kat’s mettle. This is also the book that makes things very interesting. So, while Book 1 gets your attention, book 2 gets you hook, line and sinker.

Both books of Angel in the Whirlwind are Rated T for Teens for language and sci-fi violence.

Falcone Strike (Angel in the Whirlwind Book 2) (Book 2)

Falcone StrikeDescription

Now a celebrated war hero, Captain Kat Falcone is back at the helm of HMS Lightning…and up against near-impossible odds. After an ill-timed outburst almost ends her career, Kat is handed command of a deep-strike mission into enemy space. The objective is to gather intelligence and distract the hostile Theocracy while the Commonwealth prepares its counteroffensive.

The chances for success are slim—and for survival even slimmer.

Armed with a ragtag fleet of outdated starships, a few loyal officers, and a skeleton crew of refugees, Kat knows the Royal Navy expects her to fail. But failure almost certainly means death—or worse, as the Theocracy does not treat prisoners kindly. Pitted against the enemy defenses of her old nemesis Admiral Junayd, there is no room for error. And with a spy hidden aboard her ship, Kat will need more than her wits to survive. Can Kat enter the lion’s den, strike a blow for the Commonwealth, and escape with her life?
