What’s on my Kindle for Fashion Month?

ipadOn Wednesday, September 9, the womenswear fashion season kicks off with the start of New York Fashion Week. It lasts for a month, with the fashion front moving from New York to London to Milan and finally Paris, the season ending on October 7, the final day of Paris Fashion Week.

Covering the fashion season is similar to wine tasting. You need a clean palette for each new wine, hence the crackers and cheese in between.

For fashion month, the travel between cities is the time when I clear my mind. Four plane rides and one on the Eurostar gives me enough time to read or listen to a book and thus clearing my mind of fashion during this interlude.

For the Spring 2016 season, I have downloaded on my iPad and iPhone Kindle app these four books: Shadow Waltz by Amy Patricia Meade, Escaping Reality by Lisa Renee Jones and the two books of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive – The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance.

In actuality, I have read both The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. In this trip, I’m “listening” to them. Both books are narrated by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading who have become my favorite narrators on audio books. As a rule, I actually read a book first then “audio book” for my re-read. I find that I actually appreciate the book from a different point of view this way.

For fantasy fans, the Stormlight Archive series need no introduction. It is an epic story of mega proportions. It is about a world called Roshar where magic exists via what they call “stormlight”, a renewable energy found in gemstones and replenished via the frequent high storms. It is the story of a young man who was made into a slave. It is also about a naïve young woman who had to find a way to save her family from a disaster. And most of all, it is the story of Alethkar and its royal family, the Kholins who was fractured due to an assassination.

Though the two books were written so that they can be enjoyed on their own, I strongly suggest that if you are going to start reading it, begin with the first book, “The Way of Kings” and then read “Words of Radiance ” right after. The third book in the series is expected to be out next year.

Now, for my reading pleasure and to enjoy, I have these two new books Shadow Waltz by Amy Patricia Meade and Escaping Reality by Lisa Renee Jones.

“Sprightly characters, saucy dialogue, and supple pacing are once again winsomely showcased in Meade’s sassy paean to those zany Depression-era, romantic detective duos.” —Booklist

Happily engaged to the elegant Creighton Ashcroft, mystery writer Marjorie McClelland is looking forward to returning to a quiet life in small-town Connecticut. But things never go the way a writer plots them, and the two are interrupted from their wedding planning when a young mother pleads with them to help her find her husband.

Unable to turn the young woman away, Marjorie and Creighton set their own plans aside to help her. No sooner do they start digging than they stumble across a dismembered body—and all the clues lead to the missing husband as the culprit.

Marjorie feels a nagging doubt that he might not be guilty, and as the clues grow more bizarre and the body count rises, she wonders if she and Creighton will be hearing wedding bells . . . or funeral hymns.

His touch spirals through me, warm and sweet, wicked and hot. I shouldn’t trust him. I shouldn’t tell him my secrets. But how do I not when he is the reason I breathe? He is what I need.

At the young age of eighteen, tragedy and a dark secret force Lara to flee all she has known and loved to start a new life. Now years later, with a new identity as Amy, she’s finally dared to believe she is forgotten—even if she cannot forget. But just when she lets her guard down, the ghosts of her past are quick to punish her, forcing her back on the run.

On a plane, struggling to face the devastation of losing everything again and starting over, Amy meets Liam Stone, a darkly entrancing billionaire recluse, who is also a brilliant, and famous, prodigy architect. A man who knows what he wants and goes after it. And what he wants is Amy. Refusing to take “no” as an answer, he sweeps her into a passionate affair, pushing her to her erotic limits. He wants to possess her. He makes her want to be possessed. Liam demands everything from her, accepting nothing less. But what if she is too devastated by tragedy to know when he wants more than she should give?
