Why do We Wear Hats?

Since time immemorial, humankind has been wearing head covering for protection against the elements and from falling objects.

As human civilization progressed, hats became synonymous to social position, even jobs and of course fashion.

In fashion terms, hats are a very noticeable accessory because the onlooker’s attention is first drawn to the face. A hat is the most noticeable fashion item anyone can wear. The old saying goes ‘if you want to get ahead and get noticed, then get a hat’. Indeed the word ‘ahead’ means just that one head further forward.

All the way up to the 19th century and the first part of the 21st century, wearing hats was a part of etiquette. A man or a woman cannot leave the house “hatless” because if they do, it would have been a breach of etiquette.

But, the two World Wars changed all that as practicality and functionality became the mottos of the day in war torn Europe.

Princess Diana brought resurgence in wearing hats during the 1980s when during the early days of her marriage; she used to wear hats for most occasions. But as she became more involved with charity work that brought her to third world countries, she abandoned wearing hats for practical purposes.

Today, hats are worn for both fashion and function. Though they might not be as elaborate as their 17th or 18th century counterparts, today’s hats still make a statement be it sportive like the baseball caps or dressy like the top hats during weddings.

Hats as always are worn out of need. So, it is not surprising that Hat Attack has the right hat for summer.
