Book Review: Gamble With Hearts by Hilary Gilman

Rating:

Three Love Matches in one Novella

With poverty written in her future after the death of father, Charlotte Wexham convinced her mother to go to London so that she can find a rich husband who can support both of them. Forced to sell everything they have including their annuity, it was make it or break it for the Wexham ladies in London.

On their way to London, they met the Marquis of Ruthin wherein the Marquis and Mrs. Wexham felt a tendre for each other, but Mrs. Wexham could not even think of anything except to have her daughter married first.

In London, Charlotte met Charles, the Viscount of Carlington. She also became friends with Amelia, the Marquis’ daugther who in turn started a romance with Mr. Edridge, Charlotte’s friend.

A secret engagement, a duel, an elopement, murder and mayhem fills the pages of this romantic novella. A lighthearted read.

I gave this five stars though I was originally going to give only four because the premise of the novella is actually refreshing. Charlotte is poor and the Viscount of Carlington’s finances were not in great shape either. Both have to make good matches but still decided that a love match is better than a marriage of convenience that will put their finances in the black instead of in the red.
